Lone Star State of Mind (Crystal Creek, No 24)

From the back...
Some folks ssaid it would never be the same--There was a new doctor in town, and he just wasn't their sort. Though Dr. Purdy said Sonny Dekker was the best, the man was a troublemaker. He was messing with the football team, risking boys' futures. And lots of townspeople wanted nothing to do with him. But not Beverly Townsend. Suprisingly, the exotic Dr. Dekker appealed to her in ways she'd never dreamed of. They were just friends, but their friendship set the grapevine buzzing. Then, on an eerily calm spring day, the heavens opened up and all hell broke loose. Gossip stopped. Hearts stopped. It was the end for many, and the beginning for some. Crystal Creek never would be the same again.

In my Opinion..
In 'Hearts Against the Wind' we read the love sory of Jeff Harris and Beverly Townsend. Sadly, in a later Crystal Creek book (Shameless) Jeff is killed at an oil sight. I had a difficult time accepting that Jeff was dead. As a reader I invested time in reading about their relationship and blossoming love. And than to have him dead in a couple lines of a later book just did not seem right. So, when I started to read this book I knew that I was going to have a hard time with Sonny Dekker as the new man in Beverly's life. But the more I read the harder it was not to like him. He is a good man and a terrific doctor and most importantly he loves Beverly. Unfortunately, the town of Crystal Creek is full of prejudice people, including Beverly's own mother Carolyn. No one wanted to give Sonny a chance, except for Beverly and a handful of others. But something terrible was going on with the towns football players, and when Sonny goes digging for the truth, he becomes even more unpopular with the citizens of Crystal Creek. As if the town did not have enough to deal with-nature strikes in the form of a tornado. Sonny is the only man that can help the people of Crystal Creek, whether they like it or not. This was an exciting conclusion to the Crystal Creek series.

With This Lie I Do Thee Wed
What the arrogant Lord Margrave wanted was not a wife, but a shield against all the females seeking to trap him into marriage. If Miranda would pretend to be his wife, he would give her everything her heart desired - except himself. Thus together this innocent Miss and this notorious rake set out to fool the world-little dreaming that when they exchanged their solemn vows to love each other in name only, they were only fooling themselves. This book is wonderful. An enjoyable read.

Moving, perceptive, beautifully written
A beautifully told, moving story of a boy who feels lucky until he finds out one day that his name isn't really Lucky. Full of wry insights into the human heart and psyche, this is a book for parents to enjoy as much as children. And given the tenderness of the relationship between Lucky and his grandfather, this book would make a good present for a boy or girl from a loving grandfather.

Magnificent Failure: A Portrait of the Western Homestead Era
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (March, 2002)
Authors: John Martin Campbell and Kenneth W. Karsmizki
Average review score:

A haunting photo collection of abandoned homesteads
This fine book of black and white photography and accompanying text portrays a period of Western development that flourished in the early 20th century and then died with the Dust Bowl years of the 1930s. The author, an archaeologist by profession, has taken his camera to the states in the western Great Plains and the Great Basin of the Northwest and photographed the remains of homesteads that were once part of a thriving dry-land farming economy. There are photographs of abandoned farm houses, barns, schools, post offices, hotels, cemeteries, farm machinery and vehicles, and he has written a lengthy account of the period, based on research and personal interviews with descendants of homesteaders.

Today, where once stood prosperous farming communities joined by a network of roads and railways and served by a scattering of rural towns, fulfilling Thomas Jefferson's dream of a nation of small farmers, there is thinly populated ranchland, large hay fields, and expansive wheat growing operations. After decades of unusually high rainfall, these regions have returned to their normal arid conditions, which are unsuitable for dry-land farming. In some places, the prairie grass has reclaimed the land, obliterating evidence that the earth here was ever tilled. Only a few abandoned structures remain.

Campbell's photographs are fascinating and haunting. In many of them the vast sky looms overhead. Often in the distance there is a range of mountains, sometimes snow covered. The sunlight is bright and the shadows deep; the only signs of life are the grass and occasional trees. In all of them, the details are crisply focused, and where the landscape is flat and open, everything is sharply clear right to the horizon. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the West, images of the plains, and the history of homesteading.

The Maharajah's Box: An Exotic Tale of Espionage, Intrigue, and Illicit Love in the Days of the Raj
Published in Hardcover by Overlook Press (30 May, 2002)
Author: Christy Campbell
Average review score:

Splendid Tale About A Forgotten 19th Century Plot
"The Maharajah's Box" reads as well as any splendid mystery written by the likes of Agatha Christie or P. D. James. But best of all, it is a gripping account of a forgotten plot in 19th Century British history, which had widespread reprecussions for Great Britain's relations with both France and Russia. Campbell does an admirable job recounting the sordid tale of Maharajah Duleep Singh, the last king of Lahore, in what is now Pakistan and northwestern India, and his feeble, almost comical, attempts at regaining his throne. Along the way we meet an intriguing, often bizarre, cast of Indian spies, Russian politicans and soldiers and Irish revolutionaries. If you're interested in a true story of political intrigue, this is one tome which shouldn't be missed!

Making It In The Music Business:The Insider Secrets
I have been in the music business for over 10 years. I've
read several books on the music business. When I heard about this new book called Making It In The Music Business:The Insider Secrets, I felt that I had to read this book. The first thing that I notice was that this book was written by musicians, not an attorney, like most of the other music books that are out there. The book broke down how hit songs are written, how often an artist is paid, what percentage the artist/writer's are paid, a business plan, and much, much more!!! This book is a must read by all musicians, artist, and performers. -Christina Mcnair

Very thorough, excellent style
If you are an afs sysadmin you can't afford not to have this incredible book. I'm surprised there are no other rave reviews here.Richard Campbell has done a tremendous job showing the reader what is going on under the hood of an afs system. He also mentions various little titbits you won't find anywhere in Transarc's documentation or webstite. The chapter on debuggin various problems will give you an procedural methodology on how to tackle certain problems. There is an enormous amount of info in this book. It's also worth mentioning that the publisher has done a wonderfull job on design and typesetting; very clean like one would expect from a serious technical book. Anyway what r u waiting for ?; click and buy, this is your new best friend ;)
